A paradise requires no irrigation, no work. There isn’t any paradise on the other side of the mountains, only more desert.
Nobody ever rested on their haunches and enjoyed being in power for more than a few scattered moments. Smugness radiates from establishment types and their allies in the tone of their writings, but it’s a veneer, and a fleeting one at that. They want to convey success, but most of the time they feel just as beleaguered as any dissident. This is an important thing to keep in mind when you hear people talk jealously about power, “the megaphone,” or the Overton Window. Or identitarianism.
